Needs Statement

Current research in the treatment of spinal tumors has made profound advances through the use of personalized medicine and surgical techniques, but there remains a significant gap in knowledge regarding treatment progress for many practitioners. Providers need to be updated on new and future treatment therapies in spinal tumor management, develop competence in the future therapies for treating spinal tumors, and develop effective surgical treatment plans for patients with benign and metastatic spinal tumors.

By attending this course, the participant will provide better patient care through an increased ability to:

•    Review new advancements in cancer treatment including personalized care and considerations.

•    Summarize the methods for determining surgical versus conservative management based on instability from imaging.

•    Summarize the methods of treatment available for spinal cord compression, including corticosteroids, conventional radiation therapy, surgery and radiosurgery.

•    Recognize clinical indications for stereotactic radiation in patients with metastatic.

•    Summarize when en bloc resection is appropriate as well as discuss the complications to consider for care of patients following those procedures.

•    Discuss the process of patient selection and evaluation of patients with spinal tumors.

•    Discuss the role of surgery for spinal metastasis for both bony metastasis and with spinal cord tumors.

•    Describe the long-term management and outcomes for spinal metastasis.

•    Review the molecular considerations that go into cancer treatment including analyzing benefits and limitations.

•   Discuss the role of fixation in spinal tumor surgery as well as summarize the complications to consider for post-operative management following surgical fixation for tumor resection.

Intended Audience

This course is targeted to neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, medical oncologists, neurologists, neuroradiologists, radiation therapists, interventional radiologists, and allied health professionals who specialize in the treatment of patients with spinal tumors throughout the United States.
