Curt Miner joined the Seattle Science Foundation in 2009 with over 18 years of successful leadership and fundraising experience in non-profit organizations specializing in Education, Medicine and the Arts. Ranging from small regional arts organizations to regional and major research universities, Mr. Miner has provided the leadership necessary for ongoing and sustainable success. Within Mr. Miner's list of accomplishments are successful tenures with the University of Washington Medical School, Western Washington University and as Vice President and Director of the Capital Campaign for Eastside Catholic's $70 million campus.

Joanie Block, Chief Operating Officer

Joanie Block is the Chief Operating Officer of the Seattle Science Foundation; she has served in this position since SSF's opening in 2007. As one of the founding members of SSF, Joanie has played a crucial role in building partnerships between physicians and industry to develop and create a strong medical education program.
Joanie's commitment to medical education led her to collaborate with local schools, educators, industry partners and SSF's medical advisory board to create the Kids In Medicine Program (KIM). KIM is an original, experience-based science education and discovery program designed for elementary and middle school age children. Kids In Medicine provides local students field trips to SSF and learn about heart anatomy and forensic sciences under the instruction of medical professional in SSF's lab.
With management experience in the day to day operations of clinical research in the medical center environment, combined with industry experience in the medical device start-up arena, Joanie brings a unique skill set to both the research and education endeavors of the Seattle Science Foundation.
Prior to joining SSF, Joanie's career focused on clinical research and education at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Joanie managed both Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research during her tenure at Swedish, with a 9 month hiatus in between roles to work in a start up medical device company.
Joanie earned her Masters Degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Exercise Physiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation, and her Bachelor of Science at Ithaca College in Exercise Science and Health Studies.

John L. Petersen, MD, Chief Medical Officer

Dr. John L. Petersen, MD, MHS is an Interventional Cardiologist currently practicing at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He serves as the Medical Director for Cardiovascular Research for the Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute. In addition he is the Chief Medical Officer of the Seattle Science Foundation a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating medical education and high speed electronic communication.
Dr. Petersen attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. He received his medical degree from the University Of Washington School Of Medicine in 1995 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He subsequently completed his trained in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in 1998 and served as Chief Medical Resident at the Durham VA Medical Center between 1999 and 2000. Dr. Petersen received his General Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center and was awarded the Gloria and Warren Newman Interventional Cardiology award in 2002. He was a research fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute between 2002 and 2004 and completed a Masters in Health Science degree in clinical research. Subsequently he was on faculty at Duke University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor of Medicine between 2004 and 2008. Currently he is on the Adjunct Faculty of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Petersen's research interests include clinical cardiovascular research involving clinical trials and observational outcomes research for both pharmaceutical and device therapies. He has participated in the research operations of over 20 clinical trials. Currently, he is participating in research with novel anticoagulant and lipid lowering therapies, as well as with novel percutaneous valve and vascular imaging techniques.

Gary Merritt, Director of Technology

Gary joined Seattle Science Foundation in March of 2011 as the Director of Technology.
Gary earned a Bachelors Degree in Vocational Occupational Education from Southern Illinois University.
Most recently, Gary served as the Videoconference Coordinator for Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle for more than 11 years. In this role he built relationships and provided networking capabilities for medical programs throughout the world.
Gary served in the United States Navy as a Naval Officer for 20 years starting as an enlisted Electrician. After earning a commission as a Naval Officer, he provided leadership in the Electrical, Communications and Main Propulsion Engineering Departments with over 12 years on US Navy Ships at sea. As a project manger, he coordinated a multi-disciplinary task force for the relocation of the USS Abraham Lincoln and five other ships to Naval Station Everett.

Ken Westermann, Technical Operations Manager

Ken joined SSF in April of 2009 as the Audio Visual Operations Manager.
Ken earned a Bachelors Degree in Broadcasting from Southern Illinois University in 1991 and came to SSF with over 20 years experience in video production. Ken has spent the last seven years as a Broadcast Engineer for several local television stations.
Outside of a brief stint living and working in LA, Ken has lived in Seattle since 1992.
