Resection of a giant cholesterol granuloma causing brainstem compression and facial nerve palsy using a combined transmastoid middle fossa approach. Cholesterol granulomas are cystic lesions that typically arise in the petrous apex as a result of an inflammatory giant-cell reaction to cholesterol crystal deposits that are formed when normal aeration and drainage of temporal bone air cells become occluded resulting in transudation of blood into the petrous air cells.  Surgery performed by James K. Liu, MD.

Brain Architecture Part 1 was presented by Guilherme Carvalhal Ribas, M.D. at the Seattle Science Foundation for the 6th Annual Swedish Neuroscience Institute Brain Anatomy with Neurosurgical Application Course for Residence and Fellows.
